Programs

From countless school field trips to its online Gold Rush curriculum, the Oakland Museum of California plays a vital role in education – particularly important as economically restricted California schools struggle to find teaching resources.

  • Working closely with the Oakland Unified School District, the museum’s Education staff provides more than 40 school programs serving students in grades K-12 from the nine Bay Area counties.
  • A variety of curriculum materials and in-service training programs help teachers use the museum’s resources for classroom study in the areas of education, interpretation, training, and outreach.
  • Programs are accessible to all visitors, including people with special needs and visitors with limited English proficiency.
  • Trained volunteer docents offer regularly scheduled daily tours of the permanent and temporary exhibit galleries.
  • Youth interpreters, junior guides, and community guides supplement the docent corps with spotlight tours of special exhibitions.

“Everybody in California needs to own the state's geography, and the Oakland Museum of California is a great place to start. The Education team has a talent for turning every visit into a teaching tool and a learning experience.”
